The Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach an introductory-level course in Scenic Fabrication in the fall semester 2025. The content of the course includes an introduction to and overview of tools, materials, techniques and methods of mounting a theatrical production. The emphasis is on scenery construction including basic carpentry, painting, and rigging techniques. The class meets Fridays from 9:00am to 12:00pm in the Tufts University Scene Shop; students are also required to complete supervised lab hours that are arranged on an individual basis.

The Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies offers a collegial environment for thinking critically about histories and institutions of power. The department is invested in illuminating how social and cultural formations inform performances on and off the stage. Given the department’s commitment to both student and faculty success, we are confident that the candidate will find an intellectual and creative home at Tufts as well as an enthusiastic and engaged classroom environment.

Scenic Fabrication Course Description: An exploration of the tools, materials, and techniques for fabricating scenery for the entertainment industry. Topics covered include safely working in a shop environment, carpentry, rigging techniques, drafting, collaboration, and problem-solving.
