Detailed Job Description
The Department of Packaging and Graphic Media Science at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Packaging Science, with a research emphasis in food packaging/food science. This 9-month faculty appointment offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic academic community and contribute to advancing the field through teaching, research, and service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching:
    • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in packaging science, with a focus on food packaging and food science.
    • Engage in innovative curriculum development and contribute to the continuous improvement of academic programs.
    • Mentor and advise students, fostering their academic and professional growth.
    • Student engagement in the classroom using activity-based pedagogical strategies is expected.
  • Research:
    • Establish and maintain a productive, externally funded research program in food packaging and food science. Examples of research lines may include, but not limited to: sustainable packaging, active and intelligent packaging, packaging materials, food safety, and food quality related to packaging. CET has invested in the development and growth of Research Impact Areas: Forging our Future; Toward a Safer Society, Expanding Human Capacity. These faculty-led collaborative research groups leverage existing expertise and nurture the next generation of faculty leadership.
    • Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Service:
    • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities, including serving on committees and contributing to governance.
    • Engage with industry stakeholders and professional organizations to promote the field of packaging science.
    • Participate in outreach activities to disseminate knowledge and enhance the visibility of the department and institution.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across the institution on interdisciplinary research projects.
    • Foster partnerships with industry to advance research and provide real-world learning opportunities for students.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, and industry partners.
    • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia.

The College:
The College of Engineering Technology (CET) is home to nine undergraduate and six graduate programs. It is one of RIT's nine colleges and enrolls approximately 12% percent of the university's students. CET prides itself on its constant evolution, innovation, and global outreach via online learning, corporate education, and international programs. The Department:
The Department of Packaging and Graphic Media Science is a recent merger of two departments: Packaging Science and Graphic Media Science and Technology. With a rich history and strong alumni support, the Department of Packaging and Graphic Media Science has a unique opportunity to build upon the traditions of each program independently, while offering new and unique learning opportunities built on the synergies afforded by academic and industry partnerships. With the recent creation of the Hammer Family Packaging and Graphic Media Center, this new department has the potential to advance research and application in a variety of packaging and print sectors. The department offers undergraduate and master's degrees. PGMS faculty engage students in a blend of project-based and research-oriented educational activities in two master-of-science degrees and two bachelor-of-science degree programs. PGMS' students benefit from the department's flexible and innovative instructional delivery that features world-class laboratories, cross-disciplinary education, collaborative activities, and industrial experience through a required cooperative education program. The PGMS department features state-of-the-art laboratories focused in package design and testing, polymer processing and materials conversion, structural design and rapid prototyping, printing technology; color management; substrates, and inks and coatings development and testing. Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
  • Education:
    • A Ph.D. in Food Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Packaging Science or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment.
  • Experience:
    • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
    • A strong publication record in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
    • Previous experience in securing external funding for research is highly desirable.
    • Candidates with professional industry experience are encouraged to apply
