Tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor Media Art, Media Design and Visual Communication
University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF07857

The Department of Design Media Arts (DMA) within the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position within the department of Design Media Arts. We seek candidates who have a demonstrated expertise and international profile in design and/or media arts, or the ability to achieve one.

We are searching for a new colleague with a focus on media arts, media design/visual communication, and text on screen. We're interested in practitioners who work in the areas of social, environmental, and/or disability activism. Other foci may include but are not limited to: digital publishing, design and the internet, typography and code, narrative. We value non-traditional and experimental approaches to the expanded fields of media arts and design as well as the capacity to teach studio classes at a high level.

DMA is looking for a colleague with a commitment to working in social, critical, and cultural spaces, and who believes in community building, curation, and organizing. We prioritize diversity, accessibility and accountability. We expect that this position will attract teachers/practitioners who center disability rights, who have deep commitments to social, climate and environmental issues, and who manifest their passions and their craft within the realms of media arts, media design, and visual communication.

The responsibilities of the position involve teaching three studio courses at the undergraduate level and leading two graduate level seminars, and developing independent research and creative activity appropriate for advancement within the University of California. We seek candidates whose experience in teaching, research, professional activity, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Candidates must have a Master's degree, a strong record of professional achievement, and evidence of teaching, preferably at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Service within the department and university are expected as part of this position.

Design Media Arts (DMA) is a multidisciplinary department dedicated to design and media art. Led by an internationally renowned faculty, DMA fosters creative exploration and innovative research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Embracing strategies ranging from media arts production to print to video to game design to generative software, public arts practices to media archeology to digital humanities, the curriculum is technologically innovative and intellectually rigorous.

The level of appointment will be determined by the candidate's qualifications and professional experience. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom department or other hiring unit would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask where they have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted reference checks.
