The John Wells Division of Screen and Television Writing within USC's School of Cinematic Arts is seeking a candidate for a tenure/tenure track faculty position in the field of Screen and Television Writing.

We are looking for someone with significant and sustained experience writing produced work, with strongest consideration given to those who have worked in television or ‘new media’ episodic arenas. A history of successful teaching experience is preferred; however, practitioners with minimal teaching experience but a distinguished track record in the field are also encouraged to apply. Candidates must be able to reflect on the craft of storytelling from diverse perspectives.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A CV of superlative creative work.
  • A record of strong leadership, including evidence of mentoring, training, and development of new and diverse voices.
  • Enthusiasm about teaching, and interest in developing new curricula at all levels of study.
  • Achievements recognized by industry, professional or academic organizations. These may include, but are not limited to Oscars, Baftas, Emmys, Writers Guild Awards, Spirit Awards, Humanitas Awards, significant Festival or competition awards, et. al.
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others and assume leadership roles on academic committees/task forces/research groups (or the equivalent thereof in a professional context).

An ideal candidate seeking a tenure-track or tenured appointment should demonstrate tenure-ability, or the strong potential of tenure-ability, due to previous academic appointment or an equivalent body of professional work. Rank of initial appointment will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments.

The successful candidate will teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, with topics ranging from the basics of screenwriting to writing the half-hour or hour-long pilot to writing episodic television to writing feature-length screenplays.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

  • Produced professional credits.
  • Active membership in appropriate professional organizations, e.g., the Writers Guild of America, Writers Guild of Canada, et. al.
  • Participation in professional communities, including but not limited to the WGA, Sundance Feature Film Program, Black List labs, Film Independent labs, studio diversity programs as juror or mentor, etc.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring emerging writers, with emphasis on emerging writers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good communication skills, collaborative leadership skills, professional rigor and ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within diverse and inclusive communities of discourse and practice.

Preferred Education:  Advanced degrees in relevant fields.

Preferred Experience: 

  • Sustained produced professional credits.
  • Deep engagement or leadership in appropriate professional organizations and professional communities (see above).
  • Previous teaching experience and a record of service in writing departments at a four-year accredited institution, including experience mentoring emerging writers, with emphasis on emerging writers from diverse backgrounds, good communication and collaborative leadership skills, professional rigor and ethics.

The criteria for the appointment will be excellence in all the categories of performance that are deemed essential for the appointment under consideration.
