Position Overview
The University of Kansas School of Music seeks to a fill a full-time, academic year (nine month), Director of Orchestra Activities/Assistant Professor (tenure-track) beginning on August 18, 2023. The successful candidate will be surrounded by colleagues who share a passion for artistic expression, educating students, creating professional opportunities in the field, and eager for collaborations and engagement in identifying new ways of learning, research and service. The successful candidate will have artistic, administrative, and visionary leadership of the University orchestra program including conducting the KU Symphony Orchestra and opera productions.

The University of Kansas School of Music is a comprehensive university music school offering professional training in a wide array of specializations through baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs. A charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music (1928), KU is the only institution authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents to grant doctoral degrees in music.

Job Description
Teaching- 40%
- Responsible for the artistic, administrative, and visionary leadership of the University orchestra program;
- Conduct the KU Symphony Orchestra, including opera productions;
- Teach conducting, including graduate students;
- Supervise/mentor orchestra teaching assistants and student workers.

Research/Creative Work - 40%
- Produce a record of creative work that indicates continuing growth, and national/international visibility;
- Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University.

Service – 20%
- Work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University, including service on graduate and faculty committees;
- Work individually and collaboratively in student recruitment, including building and maintaining productive relationships with public school and area youth orchestra programs;
- Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University.

Required Qualifications
- Doctoral Degree in Music OR Master's degree and significant conducting experience.
- Demonstrated success leading an orchestral program/organization.
- Demonstrated record of productive teaching experience at the collegiate or equivalent level.
- Previous experience recruiting students.
