Position description

Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Studies (UGIS) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an instructor to teach UGIS 140: The Hand-Printed Book in Its Historical Context.

UGIS140 focuses on the history and evolution of the printed book in the west while considering global influences. The course emphasizes practical experience in printing the handmade book by presenting a historical perspective on the various technologies and materials involved in producing printed books: type founding, type design, papermaking, bookbinding, illustration, and the evolution of the printing press itself.

Under the instructor's guidance, students closely examine and discuss original printed books from the Bancroft Library's collections ranging from the 15th century to the present. And as a group, students hand-set and print a small publication on the library's historic presses: the Albion handpress (ca. 1856), the Reliance handpress (ca. 1913), the Chandler & Price clamshell-style press, and the Vandercook proof press. As students learn how hand-produced books have been made in the west for the last 500 years, they are also taught about the history of the book, using examples from Bancroft's rare books and manuscripts collection.

Teaching UGIS 140 includes holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials, and demonstrating techniques in hand-setting metal type, printing on historic presses, and basic bookbinding. Preparing course materials includes short readings and working with Bancroft curators to find materials in the archive to use for each semester's editioned project. The course instructor is also responsible for the care and maintenance of the press room and its equipment and will offer occasional press demos for staff/community.

UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT.
