The Department of Visual and Material Studies in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University is seeking a Part-Time Lecturer (non-tenure stream) to teach two courses in Latin American Art with a focus in the 20 and 21st Century.

We are looking for a colleague who can teach courses that address art in public space and its intersections with Authoritarianism in Latin America, African Diaspora, Indigenous Cultures, Gender, and Art production in a global context. These two courses should focus on expanding the discourse of visual and material culture in line with the department’s ethos to teach courses that do not impart traditional, single discipline narratives, and expose students to long, broad, and diverse histories, alternative narratives, aesthetic theories, and complex methodological approaches that go beyond single national focus. Courses should encompass both historical and theoretical perspectives. Position for one semester, begins September 1, 2025.

We seek a colleague whose pedagogy examines roles played by images and objects across societies and time periods, within and outside the intellectual contexts in which such work is produced.

Applicants with a strong commitment to teaching excellence are ideal candidates for the position.

Responsibilities include teaching to BFA, Combined Degree, and MFA students as well as undergraduate and graduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. We are especially interested in colleagues who can contribute to both our academic and artistic community and have a desire to teach in an art school setting and interact with both studio courses and academic subjects with rigor and fluidity.

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in Art History; Visual or Material Culture Studies; Art History; or other related disciplines is required as is a minimum of two-years of undergraduate teaching experience.

Application Instructions

All applications are submitted via Interfolio: https://apply.interfolio.com/165383. Applicants should submit a cover letter that highlights a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level, a CV, a description for two proposed course syllabi, and two letters of recommendation.

Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position can be sent to Eulogio Guzman at Eulogio.Guzman@tufts.edu, Distinguished Senior Lecturer and Chair of the Visual & Material Studies Department. Haley Sherif, Haley.Sherif@tufts.edu, should be included in the communication. All offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a background check.
