    The Mary Pappert School of Music invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education. With an anticipated start in August, 2025, the successful candidate will join an accomplished and talented music faculty of artists, scholars, and educators dedicated to serving students with a wide range of musical interests, degree program needs, and career goals.This position resides in the Music Education program. We seek an energetic, creative, and profoundly collaborative colleague. Instructional responsibilities include choral music education requirements across the Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree—such as courses in Voice for Music Education, Vocal/Choral Methods, and Advanced Choral Methods, as well as supervision of student teachers. The successful candidate will also conduct a curricular choir (fall and spring semesters), working collaboratively with the Director of Choral Activities in planning performances on- and off-campus.


    Duquesne’s Music Education program is nationally recognized and serves as a regional leader in PK–12 music education. The successful candidate will cultivate vital relations with K–12 choral educators in the greater Pittsburgh area; develop and update course materials and curricula to reflect current trends and best practices in choral music education; mentor and advise students in the School of Music; and provide service within the program and school, across the institution, and within the choral music education profession.








    Qualifications





    • Doctoral degree in music education, choral conducting, or a related field. (ABD considered.)

    • Minimum three years of full-time K–12 public school teaching experience.

    • Demonstrated achievement in scholarly/creative activities—through performance, publications, and/or presentations—commensurate with a tenure-track position.

    • A record of choral leadership in secondary schools and/or college/university settings.

    • A record of developing and maintaining vibrant connections with K–12 music educators

    • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the profession, including teaching and programming.

    • Demonstrated ability and willingness to contribute actively to the mission of the University and to respect the Spiritan Catholic identity of Duquesne University. The mission is implemented through a commitment to academic excellence, a spirit of service, moral and spiritual values, sensitivity to world concerns, and an ecumenical campus community.


     Desired Qualifications



    • Five-years or more of full-time K–12 public school teaching experience. (Diverse settings such as urban education are of additional interest.)

    • Three or more years of experience teaching at the collegiate level.

    • A record of peer-reviewed choral music education publications.

    • A record of peer-reviewed choral performances.

    • Demonstrated ability to provide pedagogical and musical leadership in music beyond the Western European tradition (e.g., community-based music, musical theater, jazz, and popular/contemporary music).

    • Demonstrated success working in collaborative environments.

    • A record of leadership in a professional service organization.

    • Experience in developing equitable and sustainable community partnerships and/or collaborations.
