  • Open Rank Faculty Position in Experimental Animation and Emerging Media Practices

    The School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University invites nominations and applications for a Tenure-track Assistant or Tenured Associate/Full professor position in Experimental Animation and Emerging Media Practices.


    Who should apply?
    We seek an artist with a demonstrated record of international achievement and exhibition in the field. An advanced degree or equivalent is required, as well as experience teaching at the college or university level.


    This individual will support a variety of methods and techniques in making animation, with an ability to teach foundational and advanced animation studio courses. We seek a dedicated artist and educator who combines innovative technological approaches with strong conceptual direction in their artistic practice and pedagogy. An understanding of critical and theoretical concerns within the practice of contemporary animation is required, including the ability to guide seminar discussions and advise students across diverse backgrounds and areas of interest, at both undergraduate and graduate levels.


    Candidates will demonstrate the ability to support experimental animation and emerging media practices, with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following research areas:



    • Narrative storytelling and/or documentary animation;

    • 2D or 3D digital animation;

    • Expanded animation practices, involving installation, performance, generative AI, and/or interactivity;

    • Emergent media forms and/or innovative hybrid media practices that combine analog and digital techniques.


    Special consideration will be given to candidates whose practices include scholarship in the history and/or theory of animated moving image; candidates who can demonstrate how their lived experiences inform their work; candidates whose work has a specific focus on peoples, communities, and nations underrepresented in the field; and candidates whose theoretical, technical, and creative expertise meets one or more of the current areas of interest within our program.


    Responsibilities
    The position typically involves teaching two undergraduate or graduate courses each semester, contributing service to the department and the University, and developing independent research and creative activity.


    Salary and Benefits
    Base salary of $70k plus benefits package with negotiation based on rank and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
